If you're trying to avoid a real tan, or maybe you don't tan at all but love the look of a golden glow, your only option is to fake it! If you're put off wearing self tan because you're worried about looking streaky or orange, fear not! It's often not the self tan formula that will jeopardize the finished effect, but the application itself. Simply follow our top tanning tips below to achieve your perfect faux glow!
Exfoliate: Self tan will cling to dry skin which can cause a streaky or patchy effect. Avoid this by gently exfoliating your skin in the shower first. A cleansing glove is ideal to use on the whole body including the more delicate skin on your declitae. Alternatively, use a moisturising body scrub like the Elemis Skin Nourishing Body Scrub (£28.50).
Dry off: Once out of the shower, allow your skin to dry before doing anything else to it. If your skin is still wet and you try to apply self tan, the damp skin could water down the formula for a less intense effect.
Moisturise: Apply a light layer of moisturiser to areas of skin which can be dry like on legs, elbows and around the ankle area. Applying too much moisturiser will make your tan look lighter, applying an overly rich moisturiser can also interfere with the tan formula and the way it develops.
Use your hands: The warmth of your hands will ensure an even application over anything else. Simply wash your hands during self-tanning a couple of times to prevent staining.
Dry off: Once you have applied your tan, allow it to dry before getting dressed. Avoid exercise or getting sweaty for a few hours while your tan develops.

Researchers at Reading University have recently identified Matrixyl as a proven anti-wrinkle ingredient. According to research, Matrixyl stimulates the body to make more collagen and hyaluronic acid, which is an anti-ageing ingredient. Matrixyl been around for many years first developed by scientists in 2007, however is often and unfairly overlooked due to new advancements in skincare. The recent study has confirmed however that the inclusion of Matrixyl in anti-ageing creams is a key factor as to whether they really work. The good news is Matrixyl can already be found in a large range of both make-up and skincare across many brands and at a great price. Try the No 7 restore and renew day cream (£23) or Urban Decay naked skin liquid foundation (£27), which contains the wonder ingredient adding skincare benefits to your make-up. Now that temperatures are rising, it's a good time to switch up your make-up to ensure a shine-free face this Summer. When it comes to acing your base there are three essential steps to flawless skin - primer, a light base and an ultra fine finishing powder. Here's our pick of the best.
A primer is a good idea for all skin types because they will help to control shine, even out the skin surface and soften the appearance of pores and fine lines. A primer will help your foundation last longer, which is great if you prefer to wear a lighter base in summer like a tinted moisturiser. Dry skin would benefit from a hydrating primer like the Smashbox photo finish hydrating primer (£28), while for normal to oily skin the Revlon photoready perfecting primer (£11.99) will prevent a make-up meltdown.
Summer is good time to swap heavy foundations for lighter tinted moisturisers, BB or CC creams. It's a good idea to look for oil-free formulas which will adhere to the skin for longer when temperatures rise. The Nars pure radiance tinted moisturiser (£27) is worth the hype - providing the skin with lasting coverage and a radiant glow. Clinique's moisture surge CC cream (£28) has a colour correcting formula suited to summer skin that can become hot and flushed. Bobbi Brown's BB cream (£27.50) is another reliable staple, that comes in an impressive range of shades and a squeezy bottle ideal for travel.
Face powders have come a long way the past few years, many now promise HD ready skin and can perfect the way your complexion appears in a similar way to a primer. These powders are so finely milled, you can apply them throughout the day to blot shine and your skin will never appear cakey. Try MAC prep and prime finishing powder (£17.55), NARS light reflecting setting powder (£25) and Stila set and correct baked powder (£24).
