Beauty School: Just Glow For It!

beauty news July 18, 2013

If you're trying to avoid a real tan, or maybe you don't tan at all but love the look of a golden glow, your only option is to fake it! If you're put off wearing self tan because you're worried about looking streaky or orange, fear not! It's often not the self tan formula that will jeopardize the finished effect, but the application itself. Simply follow our top tanning tips below to achieve your perfect faux glow!

Exfoliate:
Self tan will cling to dry skin which can cause a streaky or patchy effect. Avoid this by gently exfoliating your skin in the shower first. A cleansing glove is ideal to use on the whole body including the more delicate skin on your declitae. Alternatively, use a moisturising body scrub like the Elemis Skin Nourishing Body Scrub (£28.50).

Dry off: Once out of the shower, allow your skin to dry before doing anything else to it. If your skin is still wet and you try to apply self tan, the damp skin could water down the formula for a less intense effect.

Moisturise: Apply a light layer of moisturiser to areas of skin which can be dry like on legs, elbows and around the ankle area. Applying too much moisturiser will make your tan look lighter, applying an overly rich moisturiser can also interfere with the tan formula and the way it develops.

Use your hands: The warmth of your hands will ensure an even application over anything else. Simply wash your hands during self-tanning a couple of times to prevent staining.

Dry off: Once you have applied your tan, allow it to dry before getting dressed. Avoid exercise or getting sweaty for a few hours while your tan develops.

Why BB Creams Are Your New BFF This Summer

beauty news July 17, 2013

A heavy foundation is the last thing you want to be wearing during this glorious heatwave! So, why not switch your base to a lighter BB cream? BB stands for blemish or beauty balm, and these wonder creams contain both make-up and skincare properties. Easy to apply and often coming in a squeezy tube, BB creams are perfect for travel and your new best friend this summer! The good news is there are so many out there, you will easily find the perfect match for your skin type. To give you a head start, here's our pick of the best!

Garnier BB Cream
(£9.99), is described as an all-in-one moisturiser, combining skincare with mineral pigments to even and illuminate the skin with 24 hour hydration and SPF protection. This BB cream is your dream get up and go cream, the liquid formula is so hydrating it's easy to apply without a mirror or moisturiser. The great news is Garnier offer a BB cream for every skin type - oily, sensitive, anti-ageing and brightening.

Diorskin Nude BB Cream (£30), is a luxury face base which has received endless praise from beauty bloggers and it's easy to see why. The fabulous designer name combined with a light, melting texture enriched with natural ingredients adjusts perfectly to all skin tones. To sum up, senstional skin in a bottle!

GOSH BB Cream (£9.99) Often BB creams come in a limited range of shades because their lighter coverage will better adapt to your skintone. That said, the GOSH BB cream is proving a best seller because of it's fantastic shade range. The lightest shade in particular contains no orange tones so even porcelain skin girls can enjoy the BB trend! This particular BB Cream is another hot holiday essential as it doesn't have an overly dewy finish, is oil-free and long lasting so you won't endure a make-up meltdown!

Summer Looks We Love: Loud Mouth

beauty news July 04, 2013

Brighten up your look whatever the weather this Summer with a bright lip! Whether you're looking for a glossy, matte or more moisturising formula, we have your perfect pout covered.

Glossy

A bright and glossy lip simply screams Summer and let’s face it, there’s no better lip look this season to compliment your jelly shoes or Perspex heels. When it comes to picking your perfect plastic fantastic, ultra glossy shade, think ice lolly pinks and juicy orange. High shine shades also help lips look plumper. Pump up the volume with Estee Lauder Pure Colour Sheer Roller Gloss in Orange (£17), Christian Dior Jelly Lip Pen in Gaia (£19) and Barry M Glossy Tube in Passion Pink (£3.99).

Matte

A bright matte lip is an ultra modern, on trend look and the good news is matte lips have excellent staying power. A matte lip looks sophisticated on  Summer evenings, our top picks are the bold and beautiful colours from the Kate Moss for Rimmel Collection, in particular the Kate Moss Matte Lipstick in Vibrant Coral (£5.49), and Nars Matte Lipstick in Carthage (£18.50), a fabulous fuchsia.

Moisturising

Summertime and the living is easy, which is why it's always a good idea to have a bright and conditioning lip colour in your make-up bag that you can easily apply without a mirror. For days like these, we can't fault the Clinique Chubby Stick Intense (£16), which as well as coming in an impressive range of high voltage shades, is actually marketed as a moisturising lip colour balm. We also wouldn't be without our super sweet Korres Lip Butter in Mango (£8).

Beauty Academy: Ace Your Summer Face

beauty news June 04, 2013

Now that temperatures are rising, it's a good time to switch up your make-up to ensure a shine-free face this Summer. When it comes to acing your base there are three essential steps to flawless skin - primer, a light base and an ultra fine finishing powder. Here's our pick of the best.

Prime

A primer is a good idea for all skin types because they will help to control shine, even out the skin surface and soften the appearance of pores and fine lines. A primer will help your foundation last longer, which is great if you prefer to wear a lighter base in summer like a tinted moisturiser. Dry skin would benefit from a hydrating primer like the Smashbox photo finish hydrating primer (£28), while for normal to oily skin the Revlon photoready perfecting primer (£11.99) will prevent a make-up meltdown.

Perfect
Summer is good time to swap heavy foundations for lighter tinted moisturisers, BB or CC creams. It's a good idea to look for oil-free formulas which will adhere to the skin for longer when temperatures rise. The Nars pure radiance tinted moisturiser (£27) is worth the hype - providing the skin with lasting coverage and a radiant glow. Clinique's moisture surge CC cream (£28) has a colour correcting formula suited to summer skin that can become hot and flushed. Bobbi Brown's BB cream (£27.50) is another reliable staple, that comes in an impressive range of shades and a squeezy bottle ideal for travel.

Refine
Face powders have come a long way the past few years, many now promise HD ready skin and can perfect the way your complexion appears in a similar way to a primer. These powders are so finely milled, you can apply them throughout the day to blot shine and your skin will never appear cakey. Try MAC prep and prime finishing powder (£17.55), NARS light reflecting setting powder (£25) and Stila set and correct baked powder (£24).
